On October 6th I did a photo walk through the city I grew up in, Franeker, which is one of the Eleven Cities in Fryslân, in the north of the Netherlands. I've added captions where needed for some background info about what's in the photos.

Overview of the city center from the western defense wall. The field at the front is it Sjukelan, a field used for Frisian Handbal, or 'keatsen' as it's called by the locals. It Sjûkelân is the most important pitch for this sport, and has the same status as Wembley does for Football.

This is part of the route of the 'Elfstedentocht', a 200km ice skating race that's only held if the winter is cold enough.

Another part of the Elfstedentocht route.

A small bridge that became famous during the 1985 and 1986 versions of the Elfstedentocht ice skating race as a large crowd was standing and singing on the bridge all day to cheer on the ice skaters

The 'Dongjumervaart', or the waterway in the direction of Dongjum, where the Elfstedentocht ice skaters leave the city and go on their long route to the next city on the route, Dokkum.
